The eastern or Manitoba elk (Cervus canadensis manitobensis) occupies a taxonomically contested position in elk biology, with some authorities treating it as a distinct subspecies and others folding it into Cervus canadensis nelsoni (Rocky Mountain elk) based on limited morphological differentiation. What is not contested is the historical reality of a distinct elk ecotype that occupied the eastern forests of North America until market hunting and habitat loss extirpated it from virtually its entire range by 1900. Historical accounts describe eastern elk as slightly larger and darker than contemporary Rocky Mountain elk, with broader, heavier antlers more adapted to the deciduous forest environments of the eastern United States and the mixed boreal forests of central Canada. Observers noted that eastern elk were less inclined to the open mountain meadow habitat preference of their western counterparts, instead using the dense deciduous and mixed forest environments of Appalachia, the Great Lakes region, and the northern Plains edge. The Manitoba population — the largest surviving population considered manitobensis by those who accept subspecific status — inhabits the mixed grassland and aspen parkland zone along the eastern edge of the Canadian prairies, extending into boreal forest in northern Manitoba. These animals are exposed to conditions dramatically different from both coastal Roosevelt elk and the montane Rocky Mountain elk: harsh continental winters with deep snow, open parkland habitat with limited forest cover, and a growing season compressed to four months or less. The result is an animal that uses its environment differently — traveling long distances across relatively open terrain, relying on the aspen (Populus tremuloides) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) parkland for cover, and accessing grassland and agricultural edges for forage. Modern genetic analysis has complicated the taxonomic picture considerably. Many populations labeled as "eastern elk" or "Manitoba elk" in reintroduction programs were actually sourced from Yellowstone National Park Rocky Mountain elk stock, which has been used to establish herds in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina. These animals are genetically and morphologically Rocky Mountain elk despite carrying the banner of eastern elk restoration. The only populations with a credible claim to representing something distinct from Rocky Mountain elk are those in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario that descend from populations that persisted through the 20th century without wholesale replacement from western stock. Regardless of subspecific status, elk in the eastern United States represent both a conservation achievement and a cultural milestone — for hunters in Pennsylvania and Michigan who grew up without elk in their state, these animals represent the return of a fundamental part of the eastern wilderness that had been absent for a century.

Eastern and Manitoba elk hunting occupies a unique niche in the North American hunting landscape. Pennsylvania's Rocky Mountain elk transplant herd in the northcentral Appalachian highlands — centered on Elk County and Cameron County — supports a limited lottery hunt producing roughly 200–300 tags annually. Draw odds are highly competitive, and the experience of hunting elk in the oak forests and reclaimed surface mines of the Allegheny Plateau bears absolutely no resemblance to Rocky Mountain or Roosevelt elk hunting. Pennsylvania's elk inhabit clearcuts, reclaimed mining sites with planted switchgrass and warm-season grass, agricultural fields, and mature hardwood forest. The animals are extraordinarily habituated to roads and human presence due to the dense road network in their range, and hunter success rates are unusually high compared to western hunts — some Pennsylvania elk zones see 85–95% hunter success. The trade-off is a hunting experience defined by open-country glassing and relatively short-range shooting rather than the backcountry adventure of western elk hunting. Michigan's lower and upper peninsula elk herds, centered in the northern Lower Peninsula around Pigeon River Country State Forest (Otsego, Montmorency, and Cheboygan counties), support an annual archery and firearm lottery hunt. Michigan's 1,000-animal herd occupies jack pine (Pinus banksiana) forest, aspen stands, and agricultural interfaces — habitat that calls for a combination of stand hunting along travel corridors and aggressive calling during the September rut. Manitoba elk hunting for non-resident hunters involves navigating Canadian provincial license systems, which are accessible but require advance planning. The parkland and mixed forest habitat of southern Manitoba produces genuine trophy bulls, and the relative under-hunting pressure compared to U.S. units means more mature animals are available to encounter.
