Hunt Area 97, Sweetwater Rocks, Wyoming

Relatively flat to gently rolling sagebrush steppe and basin topography — approximately 80% of slopes are 15% or less. The unit is named for the Sweetwater Rocks feature and includes rocky outcroppings, river breaks near Devils Gate and Sweetwater Station, and classic high-desert terrain. Elevations range from approximately 5,800 to 7,500 feet. No significant forested zones; habitat is dominated by big sagebrush, bitterbrush, and open flats typical of south-central Wyoming basins.

Approximately 80% public land, composed primarily of BLM administered lands with a smaller fraction of Wyoming State trust lands. Access is generally via a network of BLM two-track and county roads. Key boundary roads include Wyoming Highway 220, U.S. Highway 287, Wyoming Highway 135, Cedar Rim Draw Road (BLM Road 2301), and Beaver Rim Road (BLM Road 2401). No major designated wilderness areas within the unit. Walk-In Areas (WIA) may be available seasonally — check current WGFD Walk-In Hunting listings. Amenities are sparse with no hospitals or hotels within 20 miles; camp planning is essential.

Dominant vegetation is big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) across the broad basin flats, with bitterbrush and rabbitbrush on well-drained rocky slopes. Riparian corridors along the Sweetwater River and smaller drainages support willows and cottonwoods that concentrate deer for water and cover. Rocky outcroppings provide thermal cover and escape terrain. No significant conifer stands within the unit.

Mule deer in the Sweetwater Herd Unit exhibit seasonal migratory movements, with collar-tracking data showing does migrating toward Black Mountain and surrounding uplands. The rut runs from late October through late December, making mid-to-late rifle season the prime period for buck movement. WGFD has conducted GPS collar research on this herd specifically to map movement corridors and migration timing.
