Hunt Area 84, Atlantic Rim, Wyoming

Rolling high-desert plateau with rugged canyon breaks, sagebrush flats, and dry creek drainages. Elevation ranges approximately 6,862 to 8,120 feet. Terrain is largely open and glassing-friendly, though deep canyons and drainages provide travel corridors and bedding cover for mule deer. Unit sits along the south slope of the Continental Divide foothills between the city of Rawlins and the Wyoming-Colorado border area.

Approximately 55% public land in a checkerboard pattern (46% BLM, 9% Wyoming State). Large private ranch tracts intersperse public parcels throughout the unit, requiring careful attention to land boundaries. The Red Rim-Daley Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) is the primary designated public hunting access area within the unit. No Walk-In Areas (WIA) are listed for Hunt Area 84 in the WGFD Carbon County WIA program. No hospitals, hotels, campgrounds, or grocery stores exist within 20 miles. Wind and early snowstorms can make vehicle access difficult. GPS with landowner mapping recommended.

Dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush and mixed desert shrub communities. Open rolling hills with sparse vegetation cover provide long sight lines for glassing. Canyon bottoms may support riparian vegetation. No significant timber component — this is an open, semi-arid sagebrush steppe environment typical of the southern Wyoming Basin.

Mule deer use large canyons and dry creek beds as travel corridors throughout the unit. Deer move from summer range on higher terrain to lower sagebrush flats and canyon floors as temperatures drop in October. The short general rifle season (Oct 1–14) coincides with early fall movement before peak rut. White-tailed deer are present but extremely rare with zero harvest recorded in 2024.

Area 84 is a very small limited-quota unit (quota = 25) with historically low active hunter counts (~22 in 2024), meaning harvest statistics have wide confidence intervals. The 2024 mule deer success rate of 13.6% was unusually low; HuntScore cites a 64.1% success rate for 2021 (78 hunters, 50 harvested), suggesting year-to-year variability is high. No muzzleloader-specific season was found for Area 84 in the regulations. White-tailed deer tag (also Type 1, quota 25) was sold but saw zero hunting activity in 2024. Elk and pronghorn are not listed as huntable species in this unit.
