Hunt Area 82, Baggs, Wyoming

Rolling sagebrush hills and low benchlands dominate the northern and central portions of the unit; elevation ranges from approximately 6,317 ft in the valley bottoms near Baggs and the Little Snake River to 10,211 ft along the Continental Divide in the southeast. The southern and eastern portions rise into conifer-forested terrain with willow-lined creek drainages. River breaks and sage draws provide classic mule deer habitat. The unit is bisected by Muddy Creek and accessed via BLM roads including Muddy Creek Road (BLM 3306), Bridger Pass Road (BLM 3301), Miller Hill Road (BLM 3328), McCarty Canyon Road (Carbon County Road 503), and Sage Creek Road (Carbon County Road 401).

Public land comprises approximately 73% of the unit, primarily BLM with portions of Medicine Bow National Forest in the higher-elevation eastern and southern areas. Private land (approximately 27%) is concentrated in the western portions near the Little Snake River valley and Baggs town area. WGFD Walk-In Areas (WIA) provide supplemental access to enrolled private tracts; check the annual WGFD WIA map for current enrolled parcels. Key access routes include BLM Road 3306 (Muddy Creek Road) and Carbon County Road 401 (Sage Creek Road). GPS with landowner boundary overlay is strongly recommended.

The unit transitions from typical Great Basin sagebrush (big sagebrush, mountain big sagebrush) on the lower benches and draws to pinyon-juniper and mixed-conifer forest (ponderosa pine, limber pine) at higher elevations. Savery Creek and Savery Reservoir provide water sources. Willow riparian corridors line creek drainages. Cottonwood trees appear along the Little Snake River in the northern portions near Baggs.

The Baggs Mule Deer Herd (Herd Unit 427) undertakes a documented migration corridor formally recognized by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission (2018) and designated by the Governor (2020). Winter ranges extend from northern Colorado into southern Wyoming; summer ranges span from the Colorado state line north toward Rawlins — a roughly 60-mile corridor. Deer move through the unit seasonally and concentrate on winter range in the lower sagebrush benchlands during late October through winter. Rutting activity typically begins in late October and runs through late December.

Public land percentage from GOHUNT unit profile. 2024 and 2025 forecasts indicate conservative seasons and reduced deer numbers due to severe 2022-23 winter losses — hunters should expect below-average buck availability through the mid-2020s. APR (antler point restriction) was removed from Area 82 as of the forecast period after buck ratios reached management criteria. No muzzleloader-specific season appears for Area 82 in current Chapter 6 regulations.
