Hunt Area 74, Kyle, Wyoming

Rolling sagebrush flats and grassland plains broken by long, deep canyons; Como Ridge, Simpson Ridge, and Sand Hill provide the unit's highest relief. Elevation ranges from approximately 6,500 to 7,600 feet. Terrain is generally open and conducive to long-distance glassing from elevated canyon rims and ridgelines.

Access is substantially constrained by private land (~76% of the unit). The highway grid defining the boundary — US Highway 30 (north), Wyoming Highway 72 (west), and Interstate 80 (south) — provides perimeter access. Wyoming Game and Fish Walk-In Hunting Areas (WIHAs) and Hunter Management Areas (HMAs) represent the principal means of accessing private land with landowner consent via WGFD's Access Yes program. The Simpson Ridge HMA (Exit 255 / Hwy 72, north of I-80) is nearby but is designated exclusively for antelope hunting in Area 46 — it is not a deer access resource for Area 74. BLM surface lands within the unit are legally accessible but can require crossing private land to reach; a GPS with a current land-status layer is strongly recommended. No USFS roads or wilderness areas are present. Hunters should verify current WIHA enrollment through WGFD's online Access Yes viewer before each season, as enrolled parcels change annually.

Dominant cover is sagebrush-steppe and native prairie grass across the broad flats and lower slopes. Canyon drainages support cottonwood and willow riparian corridors. Upland ridgelines carry pockets of mixed shrubs. The unit lacks National Forest and does not include spruce-fir or dense lodgepole pine; it is fundamentally a sagebrush-grass landscape representative of the Laramie Basin and Carbon County plains.

Mule deer and white-tailed deer are both present throughout the unit. The Sheep Mountain Mule Deer Herd Unit (areas 61 and 74–77) carried an estimated 4,200 mule deer as of 2025 — significantly below the historical management objective of 10,000, prompting WGFD to propose a reduced objective of 5,000. The herd is described by WGFD as below objective, translating to reduced opportunity and harder hunting conditions. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is confirmed in the Sheep Mountain herd; the 2025 hunt forecast noted prevalence increasing from approximately 9% toward ~15% over a five-year trend in regional herds — treat the exact figure as approximate. Pronghorn antelope are present in adjacent areas and may be encountered within the unit boundaries. White-tailed deer use riparian corridors and canyon bottoms and are secondary in abundance to mule deer.
