Hunt Area 61, Harriman, Wyoming

The area spans approximately 320 square miles (roughly 204,000 acres) across a transition zone between the Laramie Range foothills and the High Plains, with elevation ranging from about 6,100 feet on the plains to approximately 8,600 feet at the higher ridges in the northwestern portion. The landscape is characterized by long, deep canyons cutting through gently rolling sagebrush tablelands and short-grass prairie; wide open terrain allows hunters to glass large amounts of ground from elevated vantage points.

Public land is scarce at approximately 13% of the unit — roughly 10% Wyoming State Land Board parcels and 1-2% BLM; no USFS land falls within Area 61 boundaries (the Pole Mountain USFS unit is within the adjacent Area 60). The remaining roughly 77% is private ranch land; hunters must obtain landowner permission to access most of the unit. Wyoming Game and Fish Walk-In Hunting (Access Yes/WIA) program parcels exist in Laramie County; the WGFD Albany County WIA listing does not include parcels designated specifically for Deer Hunt Area 61. Nearest services are in Laramie (northwest) and Cheyenne (northeast). I-80 provides the northern access corridor; US-287 the western spine; I-25 the eastern edge. No designated wilderness or roadless areas fall within the unit boundaries.

The dominant cover types are sagebrush-steppe and native short-grass and mixed-grass prairie across the majority of the unit. Riparian corridors follow the major canyon systems, with willow- and aspen-lined creek drainages providing limited cover. Overall the unit is open, arid, and grass-shrub dominated, providing year-round mule deer range but limited thermal cover. The adjacent Area 60 (Pole Mountain, a separate hunt area) to the northwest contains ponderosa pine and Engelmann spruce forest on the USFS Pole Mountain unit.

Mule deer are the primary big-game species managed in this area; bucks of notable antler quality are taken each season. White-tailed deer are present in small numbers, particularly in riparian drainages and near agricultural edges. Pronghorn antelope occupy the sagebrush flats and grass tablelands throughout the unit and are hunted under a separate WGFD antelope license system. Mountain lion (cougar) are present statewide and may pass through canyon terrain. Upland birds including sage grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, and pheasant are present in appropriate habitat within the unit. CWD is confirmed in surrounding deer herds (areas 59, 60, 64, 65) at 20-40% prevalence; Area 61 is not currently a mandatory CWD sampling zone but is geographically proximate to the highest-prevalence areas in the state.
