About this unit
Hunt Area 153 is a General (OTC) mule deer and white-tailed deer unit on the Bridger-Teton National Forest in the Hoback River corridor near Bondurant, WY. The unit covers ~117 square miles of steep mountain terrain (6,700–9,500 ft) in the Sublette herd management area. A 4-point antler restriction applies to mule deer. CWD was first confirmed in Area 153 in October 2025. The 2026 General season runs Special Archery Sep 1–Sep 14, followed by a two-segment rifle season Sep 15–Sep 30 and Oct 4. In 2023, 255 hunters achieved a 29.8% success rate (76 harvested). Nonresident success (45.8%) ran notably higher than resident success (22.1%). No limited quota licenses exist for this unit.
Steep, rugged mountain terrain on the Bridger-Teton National Forest between the Hoback River, Cliff Creek, the Hoback Rim, and the Greys River divide. Elevation ranges from approximately 6,700 ft in the Hoback River valley to 9,500 ft on upper Monument Ridge. Vegetation transitions from sagebrush and riparian willows/cottonwoods in creek bottoms to aspen parks and dense conifers on the slopes and ridges. The unit is approximately 117 square miles.
moderate
CWD confirmed for the first time in Area 153 on October 27, 2025 (hunter-harvested adult male mule deer; WGFD news release). The unit is surrounded by CWD-positive areas: 142 (2023), 144 (2021), 152 (2019), and 154 (2023); CWD was first detected in the broader Sublette herd in 2017. Hunters are encouraged to submit samples for free CWD testing. No emergency regulations were in effect at time of detection; hunters should verify current CWD rules at wgfd.wyo.gov before hunting. The 4-point antler restriction (minimum 4 points on either antler for mule deer) reflects quality management in this Sublette herd unit. The 2026 seasons in this profile are from Ch 6 Draft 03.16.2026.4, approved by the Commission in April 2026; regulations are pending gubernatorial approval (up to 75-day review period) and may not be in final effect. Verify final season dates at wgfd.wyo.gov before hunting.
