Hunt Area 124, Emblem, Wyoming

Hunt Area 124 Emblem sits in the southern Big Horn Basin of northwest Wyoming at 4,000–5,500 feet elevation. The landscape is broadly open with rolling, sagebrush-covered hills transitioning to rocky hillsides and canyon breaks lined with pine and juniper. Creek drainages — including the Greybull River corridor — provide riparian cottonwood-willow habitat that supports white-tailed deer and pronghorn concentrations. The eastern boundary abuts the Bighorn Mountain foothills. This is classic high-desert terrain: arid, wind-exposed, and largely treeless on ridgetops.

IMPORTANT — CWD: Hunt Area 124 (Greybull River mule deer herd, MD210) has among the highest CWD prevalence in the Cody Region. Adult male mule deer prevalence averaged 47% from 2020–2024 (range 42–59%), with sample sizes of n=15–65 per year. CWD detections are concentrated along the Greybull River corridor. The 2024 population estimate of 531 deer is 86.7% below the 4,000-deer management objective — the herd has been below objective for 10 consecutive years. General season success dropped to 19% in 2024. Per the 2026 Wyoming deer hunting brochure, all deer, elk, and moose taken in Wyoming are subject to statewide CWD transport provisions: the head and all portions of the spinal column must remain at the site of kill or be disposed of at an approved Wyoming landfill or incinerator; whole carcasses cannot be transported out of Wyoming. The Department may mandate CWD sample submission from designated hunt areas with public notice. Hunters should check the WGFD website and current regulation brochure for any mandatory sampling requirements in effect for Area 124. NOTE ON ELK: Elk unit 124 'Powder Rim' in Wyoming is a completely separate geographic area located in Carbon/Sweetwater County (Red Desert, near Rawlins/Baggs) — it does not overlap with deer Hunt Area 124 Emblem in the Big Horn Basin. Elk hunting within the geographic footprint of deer Area 124 is limited to the Greybull River HMA private-land elk season. NOTE ON SEASONS: Season dates reflect the WGFD Chapter 6 and Chapter 5 Final regulations (Final April 2026), which supersede the 03.16.2026 draft. Between the draft and final, the deer Type 6 license was removed for Area 124 and only Type 7 remains. Antelope area boundaries (77 and 82) are drawn from Chapter 5 and partially overlap the geographic extent of deer Area 124.
