Hunt Area 12, Hat Creek, Wyoming

Rolling high-plains terrain punctuated by creek drainages, buttes, and ridge systems including the Seaman Hills, Table Mountain, Shepard Point, Bald Butte, Buck Creek Hills, Swede Draw, and Old Women Creek Hills. Ponderosa pine and juniper stands appear on the ridge systems and higher terrain of the Buck Creek Hills and Old Women Creek Hills. Creek bottoms — including Hat Creek, Old Women Creek, Lance Creek, and Buck Creek — support cottonwood galleries, grass meadows, and shrub riparian cover. The broader landscape is dominated by mixed-grass and shortgrass prairie interspersed with sagebrush-steppe. Water is sparse; open plains sections are predominantly grass and forb with very limited woody cover.

Mule deer and white-tailed deer are both present and commonly hunted; ridges, pine-covered hills, and creek bottoms support both species. Pronghorn antelope are present and huntable — the unit falls within Wyoming Antelope Hunt Areas 8 (Niobrara) and 9 (Lance Creek), both of which overlay portions of Deer Hunt Area 12. Wild turkeys (Merriam's) occur in the ponderosa-pine creek-bottom habitats and are noted on Niobrara County Walk-In parcels. Mountain lion is present statewide in Wyoming under a quota management system and may occur in this area. No moose, elk, bighorn sheep, or black bear populations are documented for this low-elevation plains unit.
