Wyoming County, West Virginia

Steep, heavily dissected Appalachian ridges and narrow hollows in the Coal River drainage system. Elevations range from roughly 800 to 2,500 feet with dramatic relief between ridge tops and creek bottoms. Dense second-growth mixed hardwood and rhododendron thickets dominate, remnants of extensive early-20th-century clear-cutting now grown into prime wildlife cover.

Low overall due to brutal terrain and the economic decline of the coalfields reducing local hunter population. WMAs receive moderate pressure on opening weekends of bear and gun deer season, but backcountry ridges see very few hunters. A determined hunter can find virtually unpressured ground.

West Virginia standard OTC either-sex deer licenses with the statewide 3-inch antler restriction on bucks. Southern WV counties including Wyoming have historically been antler-restricted. Archery, crossbow, and firearm seasons follow state calendar.

Black bear is the signature species, with Wyoming County consistently among the top WV counties for bear harvest. The dense rhododendron hells and mast-rich oak ridges hold excellent bear numbers. Wild turkey occupy the hardwood hollows and respond well to spring calling. Grouse are present but populations have declined with forest maturing.

Premier black bear hunting in the eastern US, with Coal River WMA producing consistent harvests in one of WV bear hunting tradition strongholds; virtually roadless backcountry ridges offering solitude and unpressured whitetail in classic Appalachian terrain.
