Sign in to contributeMingo County hugs the Kentucky border in extreme southwestern West Virginia where the Tug Fork carves through some of the state's most heavily forested and remote mountain terrain. Rooted in the coal country of the southern West Virginia highlands, the county harbors healthy black bear populations and whitetail deer that see minimal hunting pressure. The Hatfield-McCoy Recreation Area has opened new access points in historically difficult terrain.
Extreme southwestern West Virginia coalfield mountains in the Tug Fork drainage. Deeply forested ridges and narrow winding hollows define the landscape. Steep terrain with minimal flat ground outside of river and creek bottoms. Among the most heavily forested counties in the state.
Mix of coal company land and state parcels with Hatfield-McCoy Recreation Area covering portions of the county. Coal company land historically restricted but recreational access improving through trail corridor initiatives. Remote terrain remains the primary limiting factor.
