DMU Oconto, Wisconsin

Oconto DMU covers 658.8 square miles in northeast Wisconsin within the Central Forest zone, a landscape defined by a dense mosaic of northern hardwoods, aspen stands, upland pine and oak ridges, and extensive lowland cedar swamps. Elevations are relatively modest, generally ranging from around 600 to 1,000 feet with gently rolling terrain carved by the Oconto River and its tributaries. The Oconto River drainage runs north to south through the county, creating riparian corridors flanked by bottomland hardwoods and sedge meadows. Wetlands are abundant throughout, with beaver flowages, shrub-carr, and emergent marshes scattered across the landscape. The southern and eastern portions of the county transition toward mixed agricultural land — row crops and dairy pasture — which creates productive food-source edges adjacent to forested cover. The northern reaches are more continuously forested and less agricultural, closer in character to the Northern Forest zone.

Hunting pressure in Oconto DMU is moderate overall, with noticeable spikes on public land during the nine-day gun deer season in November. The county''s large public land base means pressure is more dispersed than in counties with limited public access, but parking areas at popular wildlife areas and county forest entry points fill early on opening weekend. Weekday hunting during gun season is noticeably lighter. Archery season draws dedicated hunters but pressure is spread across a long season window. The northern, more remote portions of the county forest see lighter pressure than roadside timber stands closer to the small towns of Oconto Falls, Suring, and Gillett. Overall, Oconto is not considered a destination trophy-hunting destination on par with southwest Wisconsin counties, so it avoids the heavy out-of-state pressure those areas see, keeping the feel more local.

Oconto DMU falls within the Central Forest zone tag structure. Every licensed deer hunter receives one any-deer tag (valid for a buck or antlerless deer) with their base deer hunting license. Additional antlerless harvest authorizations (bonus tags) are available for purchase beginning in mid-August — in 2026, the sale date was August 18 at 10 a.m. — through the GoWild licensing system or at DNR-authorized agents. Bonus tags are unit- and land-type-specific: hunters must choose at purchase whether the tag is valid on public or private land in the Oconto DMU. For 2026, Oconto County had 500 bonus antlerless authorizations allocated for public land and 1,300 for private land. Cost is $12 per resident, $20 per nonresident, and $5 for youth under 12. No earn-a-buck requirement applies in this zone. There is no lottery or drawing for bonus antlerless tags in Oconto — they are sold on a first-come, first-served basis until quota is filled. Buck-only hunting is not mandated; hunters can take an antlerless deer with their base license any-deer tag.

Deer seasons for the 2025-2026 cycle ran as follows: archery and crossbow September 13, 2025 through January 4, 2026; nine-day gun season November 22-30, 2025; muzzleloader December 1-10, 2025. The 2026 gun season is scheduled November 21-29. Fall turkey hunting runs statewide from mid-September through late November with additional zone extensions into January; spring turkey seasons are zone-specific with application deadlines months in advance. Black bear hunting is available in designated zones that include parts of northeast Wisconsin, with archery and gun seasons in September-October and a late December season; bear requires a drawing and can involve multi-year waiting periods. Ruffed grouse hunting is excellent in Oconto''s aspen and mixed forest habitat; Zone A grouse season runs September 13 through early January. Woodcock migration through the county in October provides additional upland opportunity. Waterfowl hunting is available on the Oconto Marsh Unit and Bay of Green Bay shoreline access points. Coyote and other furbearers can be hunted with appropriate licenses.

Oconto DMU stands out as a workhorse northeast Wisconsin unit where a do-it-yourself hunter can realistically arrow or shoot a deer without needing private land access. The 184,000 acres of public hunting land — county forest, wildlife areas, and DNR-managed parcels — give hunters room to spread out and find unpressured pockets even during gun season. The landscape of hardwood ridges dropping into cedar swamps and beaver flowages is classic north woods whitetail habitat; mature bucks use the swamp edges as sanctuaries and emerge to feed on oak mast and adjacent agricultural fields. Trophy potential is real — genetics and age structure in low-pressure forested units can produce mature 3.5-plus-year-old bucks, though Oconto is not among Wisconsin''s top record-book counties. The Oconto River corridor and wetland complexes make this exceptional country for a multi-species hunt: arrive in mid-October for grouse and woodcock in the aspens, hang a stand for archery deer, and come back for the nine-day gun season. The ATV trail network simplifies scouting and gear transport on county forest lands where permitted.
