DMU Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee County occupies a narrow strip along the western shore of Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin, with elevation ranging from roughly 580 feet at the lakeshore to around 850 feet inland. The glacially flattened terrain features gentle moraines and river-cut valleys along the Milwaukee, Menomonee, Kinnickinnic, and Root rivers. These corridors hold riparian woodlands of cottonwood, elm, and scrubby oak thickets interspersed with shrub wetlands and restored prairie patches. The county is overwhelmingly urbanized, but its southern fringe around Oak Creek and Franklin retains farmland edges and hardwood woodlots that concentrate deer.

Hunting pressure per available acre is among the highest in Wisconsin. The county's extreme urbanization concentrates hunters onto a handful of public parcels; MMSD Greenseams sites fill quickly and feel crowded during the 9-day gun season. Archery hunters fare better, as many work private suburban woodlots and river-bottom strips where competition is lower. The extended metro archery/crossbow season through January 31 disperses some pressure over a longer window. Gun season opening weekend sees significant crowding on any accessible public ground, and midweek hunting is strongly recommended for those without private land permission.

Milwaukee DMU falls in the Southern Farmland Zone. The 2025/2026 Wisconsin deer license includes 3 antlerless harvest authorizations for Milwaukee county. Additional bonus antlerless harvest authorizations are available over the counter through GoWild starting in August: approximately 100 bonus public land tags and 300 bonus private land tags are allocated for the DMU. All bonus tags are land-type specific (public or private) and hunters must use them accordingly. No drawing is required — tags sell first-come, first-served until the quota is met. The standard deer license includes one any-deer (buck or antlerless) tag. Milwaukee County is in a confirmed CWD zone, requiring deer registration and restricting transport of certain carcass parts (brain, spinal column) out of the management zone.

Wisconsin 2025/2026 deer seasons applicable to Milwaukee DMU: Archery/Crossbow runs September 13 through January 31 under the extended metro subunit designation. Gun season runs November 22–30 (9 days). Muzzleloader season runs November 30–December 9. Antlerless-only season runs December 9–13. Holiday Antlerless Hunt runs December 24–January 1. Milwaukee County is within a confirmed CWD zone — mandatory sampling is encouraged for adult deer and brain/spinal column material cannot leave the management zone. Spring and fall turkey seasons are available with appropriate WDNR licensing. Waterfowl hunting is possible along Lake Michigan shoreline wetlands and river corridor marshes. MMSD Greenseams properties also permit small game and trapping. Blaze orange or blaze pink (50% coverage above the waist) is required during gun deer and small game seasons.

Milwaukee DMU is a paradox — a dense metro county with surprisingly huntable deer numbers in river corridors and suburban woodlots where deer go largely unpressured for months. The standout advantage is the extended archery/crossbow season through January 31 under the metro subunit designation, giving bowhunters extra weeks to pattern bucks in areas that serve as sanctuary during firearms season. The MMSD Greenseams program is an underutilized public access gem — register early online as spots fill fast. Private land access in suburban neighborhoods bordering the Menomonee, Root, and Milwaukee river corridors can be negotiated, and landowners near these areas are often willing to grant permission. CWD is confirmed in the county so hunters should request sampling of harvested adult deer, particularly mature bucks. Trophy potential is modest given overall pressure and CWD concerns, but suburban sanctuary bucks occasionally mature to 3.5-plus years in yards and parks where hunting is prohibited. The real value of this unit is pure convenience for Milwaukee-area hunters who want to fill a freezer without driving hours north.
