The city sits in the Ridge and Valley physiographic province at roughly 1,600 feet elevation along the New River, which forms part of its boundary. Topography ranges from the flat New River floodplain to modest ridgelines of the Appalachian Plateaus fringe. Undeveloped land is limited almost entirely to narrow riparian corridors along the New River and a few steep wooded hillsides on the urban fringe — the vast majority of the city is developed. Habitat capable of holding deer exists at the suburban edge, particularly along creek drainages emptying into the New River, but this land is fragmented and largely inaccessible for hunting.

Radford city is not a deer hunting destination — it is an urban independent city that happens to fall within the Western zone boundary, and hunters should treat it accordingly. The real hunting opportunity for anyone living in or around Radford lies in the Jefferson National Forest tracts and WMAs of neighboring Montgomery and Pulaski counties, which offer genuine public-land access to mountain whitetails within a short drive.
