Moderate pressure overall, driven by the county's accessibility from the Roanoke metro area (30 miles east) and the Virginia Tech student and faculty community in Blacksburg. NF entry points near US 460 and VA 785 corridors receive consistent opening-weekend pressure; hunters willing to hike a mile or more up Brush Mountain or into North Mountain drainages encounter noticeably less competition. Private land near Christiansburg and the I-81 corridor is tightly held and sees little public pressure but also sees significant non-hunting human activity. Overall, pressure is lighter than Northern Virginia counties but heavier than the more remote western counties like Bath or Highland.

Montgomery County falls under Virginia's Western Zone regulations. The general firearms season runs from the Saturday before Thanksgiving through the first Saturday in January (approximately mid-November to early January). Archery season opens in early October and runs through the Saturday before general firearms, then reopens in December through the close of firearms. Muzzleloader seasons typically fall in early October and mid-December. Ruffed grouse inhabit the NF mountain terrain, particularly in brushy regenerating cuts and laurel-choked drainages, though populations have declined statewide; hunters with dogs who work the higher NF slopes can still find birds. Gray squirrel are abundant in the oak-hickory canopy on NF ridgelines and offer a productive season starting in September. Wood ducks and occasionally mallards use the New River corridor and tributary creeks for early-season waterfowl hunting where access can be arranged. Bobwhite quail are rare in this terrain and should not be expected.

The Jefferson NF acreage on Brush Mountain and North Mountain gives Montgomery County legitimately walk-in public land that rewards hunters willing to put in elevation gain — not a given in Virginia, where most counties offer little or no public ground. Hunters who combine a morning NF ridge stand with afternoon scouting of the agricultural valley transition zones (especially on private with permission) can work both habitat types in a single day trip from the Roanoke or New River Valley corridor.
