Craig County, Virginia

The county is defined by parallel Allegheny ridges — North Mountain, Fore Mountain, Potts Mountain, and Johns Creek Mountain — separated by narrow hollows and the Craig Creek drainage. Elevations range from roughly 1,200 feet along Craig Creek to over 3,500 feet on the main ridges. The forest cover is predominantly mixed Appalachian hardwoods (oak, hickory, maple) with scattered pine and hemlock in the coves. Mast production from the oaks is the primary deer food driver in fall. Benches, saddles, and secondary drainages off the main ridges concentrate deer movement and are where most successful hunters set up. Terrain is steep and demanding — many access roads require a high-clearance vehicle and physical fitness is a genuine factor.

Pressure is low to moderate relative to most Virginia counties. Craig County's permanent population sits under 5,000 residents, and the county's distance from the Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Richmond population centers keeps weekday and mid-week pressure especially thin. The JNF public land acreage is large enough that even on opening weekend of firearms season, hunters disperse across the landscape. The Barbours Creek Wilderness receives even lower pressure because of the physical demands and pack-out requirement. The main pressure spikes occur on opening weekend of firearms season in November and around Thanksgiving week when out-of-area hunters travel in. Anyone willing to access the interior of the wilderness or hike two-plus miles off primary forest roads will find genuinely lightly hunted country.

Craig County falls under Virginia DWR's Western deer hunting zone, which carries antler point restrictions (APR) requiring harvested bucks to have a minimum of 3 points on one antler during general firearms and muzzleloader seasons — Virginia has phased in APRs across western counties to improve buck age structure, and hunters should confirm current exact requirements on the DWR website each year before the season. The season structure for the Western zone runs: archery opening in early October through late January (with a break during general firearms); an early muzzleloader season typically in November before firearms; general firearms season opening the Saturday before Thanksgiving and running approximately two weeks; and a late muzzleloader season in December through January. The total buck limit is 2 per license year statewide. Antlerless deer can be taken during archery, muzzleloader, and portions of firearms seasons with an appropriate deer license; hunters should check current limits as DWR adjusts antlerless opportunity by zone annually. No party hunting provisions meaningfully alter the individual bag limit structure here.

Black bear is a significant secondary species in Craig County — the Jefferson National Forest supports a robust western Virginia bear population and bear season overlaps with portions of deer season, so combined bear/deer hunts are common. Wild turkey is excellent here; the oak-dominated slopes and forest structure are classic Virginia mountain turkey habitat, and the county produces good spring gobbler hunting. Ruffed grouse are present and Craig County's young forest patches and laurel thickets historically supported good grouse numbers, though statewide populations have declined significantly over the past two decades; hunters should temper expectations but grouse are still encountered. Small game (fox and gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit) is present throughout the county. No meaningful waterfowl opportunity given the county's inland mountain character.

Craig County represents some of the most accessible true mountain wilderness hunting in Virginia — the combination of Jefferson National Forest scale and the Barbours Creek Wilderness gives hunters legitimate backcountry experience without leaving the state, and the low hunting pressure on public land means mature bucks are a real possibility for hunters who invest in pre-season scouting of interior terrain. The main caveat is honest: this is demanding country with moderate deer density, not a numbers game, and hunters who expect easy access and high encounter rates will be disappointed compared to agricultural Virginia counties farther east.
