Chesapeake sits entirely within the Atlantic Coastal Plain at near sea-level elevation with no meaningful topographic relief. The western and southern portions hold a patchwork of row-crop agriculture - corn, soybeans, peanuts - interspersed with loblolly pine plantations and hardwood drainages. The eastern core is dominated by the Great Dismal Swamp: a vast Atlantic white cedar, bald cypress, and loblolly pine swamp centered on Lake Drummond, laced with historic drainage ditches, and characterized by poorly drained soils that hold standing water much of the year. The transition zone between swamp edge and farm fields produces the most concentrated deer movement and is the most huntable ground in the city.

Pressure on the Dismal Swamp NWR is surprisingly moderate given the population base, primarily because the terrain genuinely repels casual hunters - waterlogged ground, dense vegetation, biting insects through much of archery season, and difficult footing make for hard hunting. The swamp functions as a de facto sanctuary for most of the year. Private agricultural land that is hunted sees moderate pressure from established lease clubs. Suburban deer populations within residential corridors are substantial but essentially unhuntable given development density and local ordinances.

Chesapeake city falls in Virginia's Coastal deer management zone. The general firearms season in the Coastal zone typically opens in late October or early November and runs into early January; archery runs from September 1 through the close of the general season. Virginia's antler point restrictions (APR) apply in this zone, currently requiring legal bucks to have at least 3 antler points on one side - verify the current requirement in the annual DWR hunting guide before the season, as APR rules have been adjusted in recent years. Coastal zone bag limits are among Virginia's more liberal, generally permitting up to 6 deer per season with a breakdown between antlered and antlerless tags. A dedicated early muzzleloader season and late archery/muzzleloader closure window also apply; consult the current DWR regulation booklet for exact dates and any refuge-specific overlays.

Eastern wild turkey are present and huntable, particularly along swamp-edge agriculture and forest openings, with a spring gobbler season available. Black bear is a meaningful secondary target - the Great Dismal Swamp supports one of Virginia's coastal bear populations, and Chesapeake falls within the state's designated bear hunting zone where a separate DWR bear license is required and a limited season applies. Waterfowl hunting is a legitimate draw: the Elizabeth River corridor, Northwest River, and nearby Chesapeake Bay tributaries offer tidal marsh hunting for black ducks, mallards, teal, and divers, with some of the better duck hunting in southeastern Virginia available to those with boat access. Dove hunting is available on private agricultural fields during the September season. Grouse are absent given the flat, swampy terrain; squirrel and rabbit hunting is possible in the swamp but rarely pursued seriously.

The Great Dismal Swamp NWR is Chesapeake's defining hunting feature - one of the most atmospheric and genuinely challenging public-land deer hunts in Virginia, with the added bonus of legal black bear hunting in terrain unlike anything else in the state. Hunters who invest time learning the refuge's ditch system and swamp-to-farm transitions will find less competition than the urban zip code implies, and an honest shot at mature bucks that have used the swamp as sanctuary for seasons at a time.
