Sanpete Valley Extended Archery Area, Utah

The unit sits on a broad valley floor at roughly 5,500–7,400 feet elevation with minimal topographic relief; terrain is largely flat to gently rolling agricultural benchlands. The valley drains south via the San Pitch River to the Sevier River drainage. Abrupt mountain flanks of the Wasatch Plateau (rising to ~11,000 ft) and the San Pitch Mountains frame the eastern and western margins respectively, but those higher terrain features fall outside the Extended Archery Area boundary proper.

Roughly 98% of the boundary is private agricultural and residential land; hunters must secure written landowner permission before entering. US-89 and UT-28 serve as the primary north-south corridors through the valley, with UT-132 providing east-west access near Gunnison. There are no significant National Forest or BLM parcels within the valley floor portion of this boundary. The adjacent Manti-La Sal National Forest (Sanpete Ranger District, headquartered in Ephraim) lies immediately east but is part of separate hunt-unit boundaries. No notable trailheads, wilderness areas, or walk-in access programs have been documented within this specific Extended Archery Area boundary. Hunters should contact UDWR and individual landowners well in advance; the unit's extreme private-land dominance regularly redirects most hunters to neighboring units.

Vegetation within the boundary is predominantly disturbed: cultivated alfalfa and small-grain fields, irrigated pastures, and rural residential lands cover the vast majority of the valley floor. Remnant native cover consists of big sagebrush flats, native grasses, and scattered pockets of Utah juniper and pinyon pine on drier benches and sideslopes at the margins of the valley. Riparian corridors along the San Pitch River and irrigation ditches provide localized shrub and cottonwood cover.

Mule deer are present year-round, with the unit managed specifically to help control deer numbers near residential areas and agricultural fields where crop depredation occurs. Deer utilize field edges, irrigation canals, and residual shrub cover. Elk from the adjacent Central Mountains Manti herd unit (which holds substantial populations on the Wasatch Plateau to the east) occasionally move down into the valley fringe, but elk hunting is not offered within this Extended Archery Area boundary — extended archery elk hunting in Utah is limited to Uintah Basin, Wasatch Front, and West Cache only. Black bear, mountain lion, and turkey are documented on the surrounding Manti-La Sal National Forest lands but are not hunted in this specific valley-floor boundary. Pheasant and waterfowl use irrigated fields and riparian corridors.
