San Juan, Hatch Point, Utah

Hatch Point is a flat-topped mesa at approximately 5,964 feet elevation, bounded on the west and south by sheer Wingate sandstone escarpments that plunge into the canyon systems of Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River drainage. The mesa top is largely level desert plateau with shallow ravines, transitioning at lower elevations into deeply dissected canyon country with talus slopes, fins, spires, and eroded redrock formations typical of the Colorado Plateau. Surrounding areas include Harts Draw, Kane Springs Canyon, and Lockhart Basin.

Primary vehicle access is from US-191 at the Canyon Rims Recreation Area turnoff, approximately 32 miles south of Moab (or 20 miles north of Monticello). The Needles Overlook Road runs approximately 22 miles west into the unit. A branch road to Anticline Overlook and Hatch Point Campground continues roughly 9 miles further on gravel (approximately 24 miles total from US-191). The BLM Hatch Point Campground (10 sites, no potable water) provides a staging point. Secondary OHV/4WD tracks access the mesa top and Lockhart Basin bench below the cliffs. The Canyon Rims Recreation Area (100,273 acres) is entirely BLM public land. No wilderness designations cover the core mesa, though several wilderness study areas (Dark Canyon, Butler Wash, Bridger Jack Mesa, Indian Creek) adjoin the southern and western periphery. Roads can be impassable when wet.

The mesa top supports a classic high-desert sagebrush-steppe community with dense big sagebrush interspersed with sparse grasses and desert shrubs — the primary pronghorn habitat. Pinyon-juniper woodland covers the mesa edges and slopes transitioning to canyon rims. Below the Wingate cliffs the terrain is barren slickrock with minimal vegetative cover. There is no significant aspen, ponderosa, or riparian component within the core mesa area.

Pronghorn are the primary managed game species; the population was estimated at 175 in 2008 and 240 in 2017 following multiple transplant augmentations (1971: ~172 animals; 1986: 150 from Parker Mountain; 2014: 74 from Parker Mountain). Mule deer from the Abajo Mountains migrate through the broader San Juan unit in autumn to winter range in Beef Basin and Harts Point areas. Desert bighorn sheep occupy the steep talus slopes and cliff faces below the Wingate escarpment. Mountain lion are present throughout the canyon country. The Canyon Rims area also supports coyote, raven, and various raptors; Anticline Overlook and surrounding canyon rims provide habitat for cliff-nesting birds of prey.
