The unit occupies a low-elevation, flat-to-gently-rolling valley floor along the lower Bear River corridor, ranging from approximately 4,200 to 5,500 feet in elevation. Terrain relief is minimal across most of the boundary; one small, isolated hill or bench is noted near the unit's central portion but sits on private land. The western edge approaches the Promontory Peninsula and Hogup Mountains, while the Wellsville Mountain Wilderness (rising above 9,300 ft) lies just to the east and forms the boundary between the Bear River Valley and Cache Valley, though those high ridges are not within this hunt boundary.

Access is severely constrained by private land dominance (~95% private). The unit is bisected by Interstate 15 running north–south and is accessible via US-91 (connecting Brigham City to Tremonton), State Route 13, and State Route 83 along the Promontory Peninsula. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (USFWS managed) provides a limited footprint of public land in the western part of the unit but is primarily managed for waterfowl and wildlife, not big game hunting. There are no National Forest or significant BLM blocks within the West Bear River boundary itself. Most of the working landscape is divided into private agricultural parcels; knocking on doors and seeking written landowner permission is the primary method of access. Vegetation is dominated by non-native agricultural crops — grain fields, hay meadows, and irrigated farmland — covering the vast majority of the unit. Small, scattered patches of native sagebrush-grass shrubland persist along field margins, irrigation ditches, and low benches. Riparian corridors along the Bear River and its tributaries support cottonwood, willow, and emergent marsh vegetation. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (USFWS managed, approximately 74,000 acres) lies within the broader area and contributes wetland habitat along the unit's southern fringe. The few areas with native shrub cover are predominantly low sagebrush and crested wheatgrass; sagebrush density has declined across the unit due to annual grass invasion (cheatgrass, bulbous bluegrass) and agricultural conversion.

Mule deer are the primary big game species present, with deer using agricultural fields, field margins, irrigation ditches, and the limited shrub corridors for forage and cover. A substantial portion of the deer population migrates seasonally — summer range extends into Idaho and higher elevations of the Raft River and Grouse Creek Mountains, with animals descending to the lower West Bear River valley for winter. Winter concentrations can be significant along agricultural field edges. Deer in this type of agricultural landscape tend to be crepuscular and highly nocturnal during hunting pressure. The broader Box Elder Deer Herd Unit #1 is managed for a target winter population of approximately 20,000 deer. Upland game birds, pheasants, doves, and waterfowl are also present given the agricultural and wetland habitat mix.
