Sign in to contributeOrange County occupies the extreme southeastern tip of Texas along the Sabine River and Louisiana border, a landscape dominated by bottomland hardwoods, cypress-tupelo swamps, and coastal marshes that define classic Gulf Coast waterfowling country. The county's wetland system is a major wintering area for Central Flyway ducks and geese, with teal, pintail, and gadwall hunting among the best in Southeast Texas. White-tailed deer roam the pine-hardwood transition forests, but waterfowl is the defining hunting tradition of Orange County.
Low-lying coastal plain with Sabine River bottomland hardwoods, cypress-tupelo swamps, oxbow lakes, coastal prairie, and tidal marshes along Sabine Lake and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area (TPWD) provides significant public waterfowl hunting access in coastal marsh; Sabine Pass area offers additional public access; private timber and ranch leases available for deer.
Moderate to high for waterfowl at J.D. Murphree WMA; low for deer in the swampy bottomland timber.
OTC; antler restrictions apply in the East Texas zone.
Waterfowl hunting is the primary draw with teal, pintail, gadwall, widgeon, and mottled ducks; snow and speckled belly geese on coastal prairie; alligator season available on county wetlands.
J.D. Murphree WMA is one of Southeast Texas premier public waterfowl marshes; early-season teal hunting near the Sabine River is exceptional in strong flight years.
