Sign in to contributeHays County straddles the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio in the central Texas Hill Country, offering quintessential Edwards Plateau hunting terrain of cedar-covered limestone ridges, oak-juniper savannahs, and spring-fed river drainages. White-tailed deer and Rio Grande turkey are abundant, and many ranches also carry exotic axis deer and other species on high-fenced operations. Rapidly expanding suburban development around San Marcos, Kyle, and Wimberley has reduced accessible hunting land significantly, pushing most opportunities onto managed ranches and paid-access properties.
Classic Edwards Plateau Hill Country — limestone ridges covered in Ashe juniper and live oak, Blanco River and Onion Creek drainages, and open savannahs at higher elevations
Predominantly private; no significant public land within county; hunting requires lease, guided ranch access, or landowner permission
