Mule deer are the primary big game species, navigating rugged volcanic ridges and desert bajadas with a tenacity honed by harsh conditions. Franklin Mountains State Park provides notable public land access in a region otherwise dominated by military reservation and private holdings.
Chihuahuan Desert basin-and-range topography with the Franklin Mountains dominating the county. Sparse desert scrub, ocotillo, sotol, and lechuguilla cover rocky volcanic slopes.
Franklin Mountains State Park offers public hunting access. Fort Bliss military reservation covers significant land but restricts civilian hunting to authorized programs only.
Low; remote and challenging terrain, limited water sources, and small deer populations keep hunting pressure minimal compared to most Texas counties.
