The Red River corridor and its associated bottomland hardwoods make this one of the better all-around hunting counties in the northern Rolling Plains. A mix of ranch land and row-crop farms defines the landscape, with lease hunting the dominant access model.
Rolling mesquite and cedar terrain with creek drainages and river-bottom hardwoods along the Red River. Lake Arrowhead provides a major reservoir surrounded by brushy uplands and native grass pastures.
Lake Arrowhead State Park offers limited public access for some activities. The majority of the county is private ranch and farmland requiring leases or landowner permission.
Moderate — the diversity of game species and Red River corridor attract hunters, offset by the predominantly private-land character.

Waterfowl hunting along the Red River and Lake Arrowhead can be excellent during migration. Rio Grande turkey are present in the creek-bottom timber and cedar breaks. Dove hunting is popular in harvested crop fields.
