Andrews County, Texas

Flat to gently rolling Permian Basin desert with caliche soils, shinnery oak mottes, mesquite grasslands, and scattered playa lakes providing critical water in an otherwise arid landscape. Elevation is relatively uniform around 3,000 feet with little topographic relief.

Low to moderate on private ranches. The lack of public land concentrates hunting pressure on the few WMAs enrolled in TPWD public hunting programs, while vast private ranchland receives limited pressure.

West Texas mule deer regulations apply. Verify TPWD current season structure for Andrews County including buck only or either-sex provisions. Pronghorn requires a separate TPWD pronghorn license available through the drawing system.

Mule deer are the primary big game target. Pronghorn antelope are present but subject to population fluctuation with drought cycles; verify current status before planning a pronghorn hunt. Rio Grande wild turkey are present near water sources and agricultural areas in the eastern portions of the county. Scaled quail hunting can be productive in years with good grass cover following above-average rainfall.

Andrews County mule deer can reach trophy caliber on well-managed private ranches with mature buck age structure; pronghorn hunting provides a West Texas plains experience in a county overlooked by most out-of-state hunters.
