Flat to gently rolling cropland dominated by corn and soybeans, bisected by the James River valley with cottonwood-lined banks, oxbow wetlands, and associated CRP grasslands. The river corridor provides the primary wildlife structure in an otherwise agricultural landscape.

High for pheasant - Mitchell is a well-known destination and opening weekend sees heavy pressure on all public land. Deer hunting is moderate with most quality access through landowner permission.

OTC any-deer licenses; James River corridor holds good numbers of mature whitetails in the cottonwood and cattail habitat. Bucks can grow large feeding on standing grain.

Pheasant hunting is the county trademark, with CRP fields and unharvested grain edges holding excellent numbers through the season. Waterfowl hunting along the James River and associated wetlands can be very productive during fall migration. Turkeys use the river timber.
