Sign in to contributeClay County anchors the far southeastern tip of South Dakota, where the Missouri River bends east and the Big Sioux River joins to create a timbered river bottom environment unlike anything else in the state. The presence of mature floodplain forest, oak-hickory timber, and extensive bottomland makes Clay County the state's best wild turkey county and a legitimate trophy white-tail destination. Pheasants are secondary here compared to deer and turkey, though cropland birds are present north of Vermillion.
