Bear populations are present but modest in the western NY agricultural zone — incidental to deer hunting. TURKEY: Spring season statewide upstate (archery and shotgun) approximately May 1-31, hunting hours sunrise to noon, bag limit 2 bearded birds (1/day). Fall season in Southern Zone approximately Oct 17-30, either sex. Permit required; harvest must be reported within 48 hours via DECALS. Turkey populations strong in mixed farmland-woodlot habitat of WMU 8R.
