WMU 7A, New York

Rolling eastern hill country in Rensselaer and Columbia counties; mixed hardwood forest (oak, maple, beech) interspersed with agricultural fields and hedgerows along the Hudson Valley foothills. Elevations modest compared to the Catskills to the southwest. Deer use field edges and forest corridors extensively. Creek drainages and ridgeline saddles concentrate movement.

Moderate — proximity to the Capital District (Albany/Troy) brings weekend hunters, but the unit is not as heavily pressured as downstate zones. Mid-week hunting and the deeper WMA parcels offer significantly reduced competition.

WMU 7A retains an annual DMP (Deer Management Permit) quota — hunters can apply for up to 2 DMPs in quota WMUs starting August 1 each year, with application deadline around October 1. For 2026, DEC expanded antlerless harvest opportunities statewide and WMU 7A was NOT listed among the no-quota exempt units, meaning DMPs remain available. An Earn-a-2nd-Buck rule applies statewide: harvesting an antlerless deer with a DMP or archery/muzzleloader antlerless tag unlocks a second antlered deer tag.

DEER: Archery season typically late September through late October (statewide: ~Sep 27 - Oct 24 opener block) with additional late archery in December; regular firearms season approximately late October through early December; muzzleloader season overlaps archery and late seasons. Exact Zone 7 dates confirmed in annual DEC Hunting & Trapping Regulations Guide. BEAR: WMU 7A is open to bear hunting — archery bear runs concurrent with archery deer season; firearm bear season concurrent with regular deer season. Hunters must report harvest via DECALS (1-866-426-3778) or DEC online system. TURKEY: Spring season — Youth Weekend late April (typically Apr 25-26), regular season May 1-31, shooting hours ½ hour before sunrise to noon; bag limit one bearded bird per day, up to two per season statewide. Fall turkey season typically opens in October and runs into December for Zone 7 — one turkey of either sex per day. FIREARMS RESTRICTION: WMU 7A is NOT a Long Island zone; rifles, shotguns, and centerfire firearms are all legal for deer during regular season (standard New York upstate rules apply).

Good whitetail numbers in a classic eastern New York mixed-farm/forest landscape; Capital District WMA provides nearly 4,000 acres of free public access with established trail network; black bear season open concurrent with deer seasons; both spring and fall turkey hunting available; manageable terrain suitable for all ages and fitness levels; close drive from Albany makes it a realistic weekday hunt.
