WMU 3N, New York

Adirondack transition zone — rolling hardwood and mixed conifer foothills giving way to steeper, forested ridges northward; agricultural valleys and suburban fringe in the southern portion near Saratoga; elevation gains as you move toward Warren County and the Adirondack Park boundary. Primary cover is northern hardwood forest (maple, beech, birch) mixed with hemlock, spruce, and balsam. Edge habitat along farm fields and second-growth cutover provides food and travel corridors for deer.

WMU 3N falls under the Northern Zone deer season framework. Antlerless harvest requires a Deer Management Permit (DMP); 3N was not listed among the 2026 no-quota WMUs, meaning DMP availability is quota-based and may be competitive. Under the 2026 regulation changes, hunters purchasing bow or muzzleloader privileges also receive a Bow/Muzzleloader Antlerless Deer Tag for those seasons. The new Earn-a-2nd-Buck system allows hunters who harvest and report an antlerless deer to qualify for a second antlered tag.

DEER: Northern Zone seasons — archery opens late September through mid-October pre-firearms, regular firearms season runs late October through early December, late bow and muzzleloader seasons follow. Antlered tag included with license; antlerless requires DMP (quota-based in 3N) or Bow/Muzzleloader Antlerless Tag with applicable privilege purchase. No Holiday Deer Hunt in Northern Zone. BEAR: WMU 3N is within the Adirondack bear hunting zone. Bear seasons align with the expanded Adirondack framework (DEC simplified Adirondack bear seasons to incorporate early, bow, muzzleloader, and regular seasons into a combined regular season). Bear populations growing statewide; Northern Zone harvest 557 in 2025. TURKEY: Spring season opens statewide (upstate) typically May 1 with hunting hours 1/2 hour before sunrise to noon; one bearded bird per day, up to two per season. Fall season available in the Northern Zone (historically Oct 1–14); one bird of either sex per day. Youth turkey weekend precedes regular spring season. No firearm restrictions apply — this is not a Long Island WMU.

Adirondack foothills terrain with substantial public land access; black bear hunting in an active and growing Adirondack bear population; both spring and fall turkey seasons available; under Northern Zone deer regulations with archery, regular firearms, and muzzleloader seasons; less suburban pressure than WMUs immediately south; proximity to Adirondack Park boundary opens door to Forest Preserve hunting.
