Unit 192, Nevada

Steep, rugged mountains of the South Carson Range rise dramatically from the Carson Valley floor (~4,500 ft) to alpine summits including Genoa Peak (9,005 ft) and East Peak (9,591 ft). Spooner Summit on US 50 sits at 7,146 ft. Mid-elevation terrain consists of moderately steep, brushy hillsides; upper terrain includes rock outcroppings and alpine meadows. Valley floors and low benches along the Carson River and Carson Valley are predominantly private agricultural land. The unit lies on the eastern (Nevada) side of the Lake Tahoe Basin divide.

Public land comprises approximately 36% of the unit (~36% USFS, ~1% other), with 64% private; most private ground occupies the valley floors of Carson Valley. All public land falls within the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (district office: 1536 S. Carson St., Carson City, NV; 775-882-2766). Key access corridors: (1) Genoa Peak Road (Forest Service Road 036) — the primary ridge-top access road running north-south along the Carson Range crest from a trailhead just west of Spooner Summit (US 50) to Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207); the north entrance is adjacent to the Nevada DOT maintenance station; the south entrance is accessible off North Benjamin/Andria Drive near SR-207; USFS locks gates at both ends on or around November 15 regardless of snow conditions. (2) Jacks Valley Wildlife Management Area — accessed via gates on Jacks Valley Road/State Highway 206; popular with hikers and bikers, hunting is legal but primitive weapons are encouraged. (3) Leviathan Mine Road — provides access to the Carson River and its associated public benches in the southern portion of the unit. Major highway corridors: US 395 (eastern boundary), US 50 (northern boundary near Spooner Summit), SR-207 (Kingsbury Grade, southern access). No public campgrounds exist within the unit; dispersed camping on USFS land is allowed with a campfire permit (14-day limit). Full services available in Carson City and Gardnerville/Minden. No designated wilderness within unit 192, though the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) boundary intersects the upper western edge and has special bear-hunting restrictions.

Lower-elevation slopes and foothills feature tall sagebrush, buckbrush, mountain mahogany, and scattered pinyon pines with mixed conifers. Mid-elevation ridges support denser mountain mahogany, bitter cherry, manzanita, and mixed conifer forest. Upper reaches hold subalpine forest of tall pines transitioning to open alpine meadows and rock. Valley floors contain irrigated pasture, willows, cottonwood, and riparian brush along the Carson River and its tributaries. Riparian corridors along the Carson River's western benches (accessible via Leviathan Mine Road) provide important winter and transitional habitat.

Mule deer are the primary big game species, with the population associated with the Carson River Interstate Herd, cooperatively managed with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. A portion of the herd is migratory, summering on the California side of the crest and filtering onto Nevada winter ranges from mid-November, with the bulk arriving by mid-December. Resident deer occupy the unit year-round at moderate densities and are widely scattered even in winter. Deer move between higher-elevation forest and alpine zones in summer and descend to the 6,000-6,500 ft band and lower benches during the general and late archery seasons. Black bear are present and huntable in the unit (unit group 192/194/195/196), with portions of units 192 and 194 within the LTBMU subject to special bear-hunting restrictions. Mountain lion inhabit the unit and are known to affect deer behavior.
