Unit 183, Nevada

The unit spans elevations from roughly 3,400 feet on the Dixie Valley floor to approximately 9,900 feet on the central Clan Alpine ridge. The Clan Alpine and Augusta Mountains feature steep, deeply dissected canyons with dramatic elevation relief; the New Pass Range contains peaks to approximately 9,003 feet. Valley floors and inter-range flats in Edwards Creek Valley and Dixie Valley offer rolling terrain with salt flats at the lowest elevations. The Clan Alpine range contains numerous named canyons with prominent rock terrain, notably Deep Canyon.

Unit 183 is approximately 99% public land managed by the BLM Carson City Field Office (775-885-6000). The Clan Alpine Mountains Wilderness (128,362 acres) is non-motorized. US Highway 50 runs east-west providing the primary corridor. State Route 121 runs through Dixie Valley on the west side of the Clan Alpines. The main road through Edwards Creek Valley provides access to the range's east slopes. Jersey Valley Road, State Route 305, and Antelope Valley Road provide access to the Augusta Mountains from the east. Hunter access onto Navy-owned lands (NAS Fallon) in the Horse Creek drainage is permitted through a Memorandum of Understanding with NDOW. Two-track dirt roads ascend a few canyons at lower elevations; most mountain terrain requires hiking. Nearest services: Fallon (full services including medical, fuel, food, lodging) to the west; Cold Springs on US 50 (restaurant, limited lodging, RV hookups) near the east side of the Clan Alpines. Limited cell service throughout most of the unit.

Desert brush dominates the valley floors and lower foothill zones. Pinyon-juniper woodland covers large portions of the middle elevations of the Clan Alpine, New Pass, and Augusta ranges. Sagebrush-steppe occupies the transitional foothill and bench areas. Salt flats occur at the lowest elevations of Dixie Valley and Edwards Creek Valley. The Clan Alpine Wilderness (128,362 acres, designated via the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act) supports shrub communities on steep canyon slopes.

Mule deer occupy the upper elevations of the Clan Alpine, Desatoya, New Pass, and Stillwater ranges during hunting season, with highest densities found in the Clan Alpine and upper Desatoya ranges. Hunter success improves later in the general rifle season. Pronghorn antelope range across the broad valley floors and lower sagebrush-steppe surrounding the mountain ranges; the unit group 181-184 supports a significant antelope population. Desert bighorn sheep inhabit the steep rocky terrain of the Clan Alpine Mountains; key areas include Cow Canyon, Deep Canyon, Dummy Canyon, Grover Canyon, Horse Creek, Chalk Mountain, Hercules Canyon, the Louderback Mountain area, the Little Angel Spur, and the Bench Creek Spur. Hunting effort typically starts at lower elevations near the valley floor and moves higher as the season progresses. Mountain lions are present. Wild horses (Clan Alpine HMA) also roam the unit.
