Unit 044, Nevada

The unit contains two major mountain systems: Granite Mountain (Humboldt County) and the East Range (Pershing County, high point approximately 6,253 ft / 1,906 m). Mountain terrain is steep in the ranges while the surrounding basins — Buena Vista Valley, Grass Valley, Pleasant Valley, and Dun Glen Flat — are flat to gently rolling, ranging roughly 4,260 ft in the lower valleys to over 6,200 ft on range crests. Basin-and-range topography dominates, with the valleys oriented roughly north-south between parallel mountain ridges.

Unit 044 is approximately 64% public land managed by the BLM Winnemucca District (which oversees roughly 8.2 million acres across Humboldt and Pershing counties). The remaining 36% is private, with a checkerboard private-BLM pattern predominant in the northern half of the unit (northern Buena Vista and Grass valleys are mostly private; southern halves are mostly BLM). The primary highway framework: Interstate 80 forms the northern boundary near Winnemucca and Mill City; Nevada State Route 400 (Pershing County) runs north-south through Dun Glen Flat connecting Unionville/Kyle Hot Springs Road to the Mill City interchange on I-80/US-95; Nevada State Route 396 provides access near Lovelock at the unit's southern end. Key unpaved access routes include Buena Vista Valley Road (along the western flanks), Kyle Hot Spring Road (western access), Grass Valley Road (unpaved, through Grass Valley toward Goldbanks on the eastern side), and Dego Pass Road (south). Dun Glen Canyon in the East Range is accessible via graded dirt from I-80 at Mill City, requiring high-clearance vehicles. No designated wilderness areas fall within unit 044 itself, though neighboring wilderness study areas exist in Pershing County (Fencemaker, North Sahwave). Cell service is limited in the southern portion. Nearest services: Winnemucca (north) and Lovelock (south); fuel and supplies also available at Mill City.

Valleys and lower bajadas are dominated by big sagebrush and desert shrub communities (black sagebrush, shadscale saltbush, rabbitbrush). Mid-elevation slopes (roughly 5,000–6,000 ft) support pinyon-juniper woodland. Higher terrain carries mountain mahogany and scattered aspen. Portions of the East Range experienced range fires in recent years, resulting in cheatgrass coverage that is gradually being replaced by native vegetation through natural succession. The sagebrush steppe is recognized as prime Greater Sage-Grouse and pronghorn habitat.

Mule deer (unit group 043-044-046) are present with both summer and winter ranges in the mountains and valleys; the herd is managed as part of NDOW's Area 16. Per NDOW management documents, mule deer densities are thought highest in unit 046, with units 044 and 045 similar to each other. The overall mule deer population continues to decline in these units. Specific areas noted for unit 044: Rose Creek Mountain, Raspberry Creek, Dun Glen Peak and Canyon, Inskip Canyon, Leach Canyon, Willow Creek, Table Mountain, French Boy Canyon, Organ Peak, and Rockhill Mountain. Pronghorn antelope occupy the sagebrush valleys and are present in units 043-046 collectively, with the population considered strong. Desert bighorn sheep are present in the East Range and are managed jointly across units 044 and 182; they inhabit the steep rocky terrain of the East Range. Mountain lion are present throughout the rocky ranges. Upland birds including greater sage-grouse (sagebrush steppe habitat) and chukar partridge (rocky canyon slopes) are present. Units 043, 044, and 046 have fishable trout streams.
