Unit 035, Nevada

Basin-and-range province; elevation ranges from approximately 4,100 ft on valley floors to 9,085 ft at Quinn Peak in the Jackson Mountains (King Lear Peak 8,842 ft, Parrot Peak 8,448 ft). Lower elevations feature dry lake beds, sand dunes, and broad sagebrush flats; the Jackson Mountains rise steeply with V-shaped rocky canyons, sharp-crested ridges, and deep rugged drainages. Volcanic and Paleozoic sedimentary/metamorphic geology. The Bloody Run Hills, Slumbering Hills, and Krum Hills are lower, isolated ranges separated by flat desert basins.

Primary highway access via US Route 95, then west on State Route 140 (Denio Highway) to reach the north side of the Jackson Mountains. South access uses Jungo Road (unpaved county road) that runs west from Winnemucca along railroad tracks. Key internal roads: Bottle Creek Road (east side of the Jackson Mountains), Jackson Creek/Trout Creek Road (splits through the range west to southeast — remains open for motorized access), and Leonard Creek Road (west side, accessed off SR-140). The unit lies within the Black Rock Desert–High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA, established 2000), managed by BLM's Black Rock Field Office, Winnemucca District. Two federally designated wilderness areas within the unit prohibit motorized and mechanized use: North Jackson Mountains Wilderness (Parrot Peak area) and South Jackson Mountains Wilderness (King Lear Peak area). Iron King, Bottle Creek, and Trout Creek Spur areas outside the wilderness boundaries are unrestricted. Subunit 035D covers the Jackson Mountains (west of Bottle Creek Road); subunit 035E covers the Bloody Run Hills and Slumbering Hills (east of Bottle Creek Road, west of US-95). Note: Jungo Road may experience significant congestion late August through early September during the annual Burning Man event. Nearest services in Winnemucca.

Sagebrush and low desert scrub dominate the unit from valley floors up to mid-elevation; mountain mahogany and western juniper cover canyon rims and upper slopes of the Jackson Mountains and Bloody Run Hills; scattered aspen groves and willow/cottonwood stands occur in shaded canyon drainages. Great Basin shrub-steppe characterizes the lower elevations, transitioning to Great Basin mixed shrub at mid-elevations and sparse mountain brush near the highest ridges. Juniper is the primary conifer present.

Mule deer are the primary big game quarry, with populations concentrated in the Jackson Mountains (especially north of the Trout Creek–Jackson Creek Road) and some presence in the Bloody Run Hills and Slumbering Hills. Pronghorn antelope occur throughout the unit in the sagebrush flats and lower basins. California bighorn sheep occupy the Jackson Mountains (King Lear Peak and Parrot Peak areas most productive; sheep also present at Iron King Mine and O'Brien Creek area); a separate reintroduced herd occupies the Bloody Run Hills and Slumbering Hills (subunit 035E). Mountain lion is present and huntable. Chukar partridge is noted as present, with upland game seasons open concurrently with deer season. Wild horses also present and can affect forage resources.
