DMZ 42 covers the southern Atlantic County coastal plain from the Mullica River south to Great Egg Harbor Bay, centered on Mays Landing and the Great Egg Harbor River. The zone offers productive deer hunting in a mix of pine barrens, hardwood swamps, and coastal farmland, with public access through Absecon WMA, Port Republic WMA, and Tuckahoe WMA. Hunting pressure is moderate with a generous antlerless allocation under Regulation Set #6.

Terrain & elevation

Southern Atlantic County coastal plain — pine barrens, hardwood swamps, tidal marsh fringe along the Mullica River and Great Egg Harbor River, with scattered agricultural fields near Mays Landing. Flat to gently rolling, dominated by sandy soils and cedar swamps typical of the New Jersey Pinelands.

Species & seasons

Deer: Regulation Set #6 applies. Fall Bow Sept 13–Oct 31 (antlerless-first rule Sept 13–Oct 3); Permit Bow Nov 1–Dec 31; Winter Bow Jan 1–31; Six-Day Firearm Dec 8–13 (2 antlered); Permit Muzzleloader and Shotgun Dec 1–Jan 31. Antlerless limit is 9 per season across bow and firearm seasons; 1 antlered per season (2 during six-day). All harvests must be tagged and reported by 7 pm on harvest day. Turkey: Spring gobbler season only (fall season closed statewide); permit via lottery (apply Jan–Feb) or OTC leftover sales; spring season runs late April through late May. Bear: Not present — bear hunting is restricted to NW NJ (Sussex, Warren, Morris, Passaic counties); DMZ 42 in Atlantic County is outside bear range. Firearm restrictions: shotgun and muzzleloader only for deer (rifles prohibited statewide for deer in NJ).

Highlights

Large antlerless allocation (up to 9 antlerless per season) makes DMZ 42 one of the more productive antlerless-deer zones in south Jersey. Multiple WMAs provide solid walk-in access across pine barrens and swamp habitat. Great Egg Harbor River corridors hold good deer numbers. Spring turkey hunting available through the NJ permit lottery system.
