WMU J2, New Hampshire

Mixed hardwood and conifer forest with lakes, wetlands, and rolling hills. Dominated by maple, beech, birch, and white pine. Ossipee Lake basin, Swift River drainage, and Tamworth highlands provide diverse habitat. Elevation ranges from lake flats (~400 ft) to mid-elevation ridges (~2,000 ft). Good deer browse in regenerating clear-cuts and forest edges. Bear habitat strong in beech-rich drainages and blueberry ridges.

White Mountain National Forest covers portions of the northern and western edges of J2 (Albany, Tamworth, Sandwich townships) and is open to public hunting. Ossipee Lake Natural Area (state-owned, ~400 acres) in Carroll County provides additional access. NH Fish and Game WMAs and state forests are scattered throughout; nearly 64,000 acres of NHFG-managed land statewide are open to hunting. Private timber company lands in Carroll County have historically allowed access but verify before hunting. Route corridors along Rte 16, Rte 25, and Rte 109 provide trailhead access into back country.

Moderate. Lake-region communities bring some recreational pressure near Wolfeboro and Moultonboro; backcountry WMNF and state forest parcels in the Ossipee/Tamworth corridor see lighter pressure. Overall a mid-tier pressure unit compared to southern NH WMUs.

One buck per hunter statewide included with license. Antlerless (doe) harvest in J2 requires a separate antlerless permit (AOP/DOP), applied for through NHFG. J2 is a central-tier unit with moderate antlerless permit issuance; permit availability varies by year depending on herd goals. Antlerless permits are unit-specific and not transferable to adjacent WMUs.

DEER: Archery season opens September 15; muzzleloader approximately November 1-11; regular firearms season approximately November 11 through early December. Crossbows legal during archery season in J2. One antlered deer per season with license; antlerless by permit only. BEAR: Season runs September 1 through approximately December 6 in J2. Bear permit required ($16 resident / $48 non-resident) in addition to hunting license; no lottery, permits available over-the-counter. Baiting and hound hunting permitted under NH regulations. TURKEY: Spring season in May (youth weekend late April); fall shotgun season approximately October 13-19 in WMUs including J2. Tag included with license. MOOSE: J2 is within the moose range; moose permits issued by lottery statewide. Antlered and antlerless permits available through annual drawing. Season typically mid-late October. Odds vary but non-zero in Carroll County units. Apply through NHFG lottery.

Large contiguous WMNF acreage in the Ossipee/Tamworth corridor offers walk-in public land with minimal pressure. Strong beech mast years produce excellent bear and deer activity. Wild turkey populations have expanded steadily and J2 supports both spring and fall seasons. The lakes region terrain creates natural travel funnels for deer during the rut. Moose are present and visible, especially near wetland edges in northern portions of the unit.
