WMU G1 covers western Grafton County along the Vermont border, encompassing the towns of Orford, Wentworth, Rumney, Canaan, Andover, and New London in a landscape of mixed hardwood-softwood forest and rolling Connecticut River valley highlands. Deer densities are moderate with good buck quality and a short either-sex window during firearms season; black bear are huntable September through late November; wild turkey are present year-round with a strong spring season though fall shotgun is closed. Access is bolstered by White Mountain National Forest parcels in the eastern reaches and scattered NH Fish and Game WMAs throughout the unit.

Terrain & elevation

Rolling mixed hardwood-softwood forest typical of the western Grafton County uplands along the Vermont border. Dominant cover includes northern hardwoods (maple, beech, birch), interspersed with hemlock, white pine, and spruce-fir at higher elevations. The unit spans the Connecticut River valley corridor from Orford south through Canaan and New London, with ridgelines reaching 1,500-2,000 ft. Numerous brooks, beaver wetlands, and second-growth regeneration areas provide excellent deer and bear habitat.

Tags & permits

No special antlerless-only permit program exists for WMU G1 (special AOP programs are limited to Units L and M statewide). During the archery season any deer including antlerless may be taken on a standard archery license. During the first 6 days of firearms season (Nov 11-16) any deer including antlerless is legal; firearms season goes antlered-only Nov 17 through Dec 6. Muzzleloader any-deer window is Oct 31-Nov 5, antlered-only Nov 6-10.

Species & seasons

DEER: Archery Sept 15-Dec 15 (any deer, crossbow legal); Muzzleloader any-deer Oct 31-Nov 5, antlered-only Nov 6-10; Firearms any-deer Nov 11-16, antlered-only Nov 17-Dec 6. Youth weekend Oct 25-26. No special antlerless permit program; antlerless opportunity limited to archery season and first 6 days of firearms. TURKEY: Fall archery Sept 15-Dec 15 (1 turkey either sex); Fall shotgun CLOSED in WMU G per 2025 rulemaking. Spring May 1-31, 1 bearded bird (second bird not permitted in WMU G units). Youth turkey weekend April 25-26. BEAR: Season opens Sept 1 statewide; G1 general season runs through approximately Nov 30. No permit required beyond hunting license; $16 resident/$48 non-resident bear permit fee. Bears must be registered within 48 hours of harvest. MOOSE: Available through statewide lottery only (~34 permits issued annually statewide); G1 is in the lower-probability allocation zone compared to northern WMUs (A, B, C). Moose season typically October 18-26. Applications open January through late May.

Highlights

Crossbow is legal during the full archery season (Sept 15-Dec 15) — one of the more hunter-friendly crossbow provisions in the Northeast. Strong spring turkey season with a bearded bird available May 1-31. Black bear season runs September 1 through approximately November 30, offering both archery and firearms opportunities. Mixed forest and proximity to the Connecticut River make G1 a sleeper unit for mature bucks with comparatively lower pressure than southern NH units.
