DMU Loup West, Nebraska

Rolling Sandhills dune topography with grass-covered ridges, pocket lakes, wet meadows, and timbered breaks along the North, Middle, and South Loup River drainages. CRP fields and native mixed-grass prairie dominate uplands. River-bottom cottonwood and cedar draws provide whitetail cover; open dune swales and ridgelines are prime mule deer habitat.

Moderate overall. Private land gatekeeping keeps pressure low for those with landowner access or outfitter connections. OFW and WMA tracts can see concentrated pressure during the November firearm season. Nonresident draw competition is real — NGPC caps nonresident Any Deer permits at 15% of total, and preference points accumulate meaningfully. The unit is far less crowded than eastern Nebraska agricultural units.

Draw-only permit unit. Any Deer firearm permit (allows harvest of either species, including one mule deer buck per permit; hunters may hold a second mule deer unit permit in a different unit). Antlerless Only (AO) and Whitetail Antlerless Only (WT AO) permits also offered via draw; both had bonus tags removed and permit numbers reduced starting 2024 as part of statewide antlerless reductions (~8,000 fewer antlerless tags issued statewide in 2025, fourth consecutive year of cuts). Nonresident may apply for one permit or purchase a preference point. Archery season is OTC statewide (Sept 1–Dec 31).

Mixed whitetail and mule deer unit. Whitetails concentrate in Loup River bottom timber, cedar draws, and CRP edges — bucks often found in bachelor groups within a mile or two of the river. Mule deer range the open upland dune ridges and grassy swales; the Sandhills/Loup corridor has historically ranked among the top three Nebraska units for mule deer buck harvest. Antlerless mule deer may NOT be taken on public hunting lands (OFW, WMA) — restricted to private ground only. Season structure: Archery Sept 1–Dec 31; November Firearm Nov 16–24; Muzzleloader Dec 1–31; Late Firearm Antlerless Jan 1–15.

One of Nebraska's most scenic and underrated mixed-species deer units. The combination of spot-and-stalk mule deer on open dunes and treestand or still-hunting whitetails in river-bottom timber makes it a versatile destination. Mule deer bucks can reach exceptional size in the nutritious Sandhills grass country. Reduced antlerless quotas signal a recovering herd with improving buck-to-doe ratios. CRP enrollment and native prairie preservation keep habitat quality high. Outfitter-guided hunts on large private ranches are the premium option; self-guided hunters with OFW access can find quality hunting with scouting effort.
