DMU Blue Southeast, Nebraska

Rolling agricultural landscape dominated by cultivated crops (corn, soybeans, wheat) with CRP grass fields, hardwood-timbered draws, and river-bottom corridors along the Little Blue, Big Blue, and Republican River drainages. Elevation is gentle and relief modest, characteristic of the eastern Nebraska plains. Woodlots and creek-bottom timber concentrate deer movement between fields.

Moderate to high. Blue Southeast consistently ranks among the top three Nebraska units for total whitetail buck harvest during both archery and November firearm seasons, drawing significant resident hunter effort. Private-land hunters who secure exclusive permission experience far lower effective pressure than public-land hunters. The nine-day November firearm season concentrates the most competition.

Hunters may purchase a statewide whitetail buck permit (OTC, valid September 1 – December 31 for archery, November firearm, and muzzleloader seasons). Unit-specific antlerless draw permits are available for Blue Southeast; the River Antlerless – Blue River boundary overlaps portions of the unit with its own separate quota. All unit draw permits now use a season-choice format allowing archery, firearm, or muzzleloader harvest on a single tag. Youth permits (age 16 and under) are available at reduced cost (~$8.50). Antlerless permit quotas are set annually by NGPC; Blue Southeast has historically offered antlerless opportunity but quantities vary with herd objectives.

Whitetail deer are the sole big-game deer species in southeastern Nebraska; mule deer do not range into this unit. The unit has produced top-three statewide whitetail buck harvests in multiple years (2022–2025 data). Turkey (Eastern) are also present and huntable. Archery season runs September 1 – December 31; the nine-day November firearm season typically falls mid-November; muzzleloader season runs December 1–31. Electronic harvest reporting (Telecheck) introduced for the 2024 November firearm season replaced mandatory physical check stations.

Consistently one of Nebraska's highest-producing whitetail buck units statewide. River-bottom and creek-draw timber adjacent to vast corn and soybean fields creates classic Midwestern rut hunting. CRP and WIA ground provide walk-in access for hunters without private-land connections. Rock Glen WMA offers varied terrain — prairie, ravines, and wooded draws — that holds whitetails year-round. The unit's eastern location near Fairbury and the Little Blue River corridor is widely regarded as some of the best public-land whitetail habitat in southeastern Nebraska.
