Sign in to contributeWarren County sits along the Virginia border in the northern Piedmont, sharing the Kerr Lake reservoir system with Vance County and offering some of the most accessible public deer and turkey hunting in the region. The county rural character and relatively sparse population keep pressure manageable on both public and private ground, and bottomland hardwoods along Roanoke River drainages concentrate deer throughout the season.
Gently rolling Piedmont with hardwood and mixed pine forests, Kerr Lake shoreline in the northeast, bottomland hardwoods along Roanoke River tributaries, and scattered agricultural fields supporting dove and turkey populations.
Kerr Lake Game Land extends into Warren County with multiple public access points. Additional WRC game lands provide further options. Private farmland is huntable with permission in this low-density rural county.
Low to moderate. Limited population and distance from the Research Triangle keep hunter numbers manageable across both public and private lands.
OTC deer license required.
Turkey hunting is a legitimate secondary pursuit with good populations in mixed forest tracts. Early-season dove fields on agricultural land draw hunters in September. Small game seasons are underutilized.
