Sign in to contributePolk County sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge just north of the South Carolina border, where Piedmont terrain transitions into mountain ridges and gorges along the Green River and Pacolet River drainages. Green River Game Land provides exceptional public hunting access in rugged terrain holding deer, turkey, and black bear. The hunting character is distinctly mountain-foothills, with cove hardwood diversity and steep topography rewarding mobile, fit hunters.
Rugged foothills with steep ridges, hardwood coves, the Green River Gorge, Pacolet River bottomlands, and ridge-top open woods transitioning from Piedmont to Blue Ridge. Elevation ranges from roughly 700 to over 2,500 feet.
Green River Game Land provides the primary public hunting with thousands of acres of mountain foothills terrain. Some Pisgah National Forest land abuts the northern county boundary. Private farms and mountain tracts make up the balance.
Low to moderate. Remote terrain and limited road access naturally spread hunters across the landscape. Green River rewards those willing to hike in from trailheads.
Over-the-counter license. Antler restrictions apply on Green River Game Land per NC WRC rules.
Wild turkey are plentiful in cove hardwood drainages and respond well to calls in spring. Black bear are present throughout the mountain foothills, particularly in the Green River watershed. Ruffed grouse may be encountered but populations have declined from historic highs.
Green River Game Land provides mountain foothills hunting with serious bear and turkey potential; rugged gorge terrain produces trophy-quality reclusive bucks on adjacent private land.
