Black bear are a defining feature of this landscape, with mountain bear densities among the highest in western NC drawing dedicated hunters each fall. White-tailed deer inhabit the agricultural creek bottoms and lower-elevation hardwood forests, while wild turkey work the oak-ridge systems above.
