Sign in to contributeHyde County is one of the most ecologically wild counties in North Carolina, dominated by vast pocosins, flooded agricultural impoundments, and Lake Mattamuskeet — the largest natural lake in the state and a nationally significant waterfowl staging area. Tundra swans, Canada geese, and multiple duck species winter here in staggering numbers, making waterfowl hunting the primary draw for out-of-state visitors. The dense pocosin swamps also harbor one of the most robust black bear populations on the East Coast.
