County Ozark, Missouri

Ozark County sits atop the Ozark Plateau in the core of the Missouri Ozarks, characterized by deeply dissected limestone and dolomite karst terrain. Elevations range from roughly 700 feet in river valleys to nearly 1,470 feet at Bristle Ridge. The landscape is dominated by mixed oak-hickory forest covering steep hollows, cedar glades, and spring-fed creek drainages. Ozark County is located roughly 220 miles from St. Louis and 190 miles from Kansas City, far enough to deter the bulk of weekend-warrior traffic that hammers central and north Missouri ag counties. The rugged Ozarks topography — steep hollows, rocky ridges, and dense canopy — naturally concentrates casual hunters near forest roads and trailheads. Interior national forest units beyond a mile or two from road access see very little pressure after the opening weekend of the November firearms season. Archery hunters who put in the legwork in September and October often have entire drainages to themselves. Ozark County hunters may fill up to four firearms antlerless deer permits during the combined firearms season (all portions combined). These permits are available over the counter — no quota draw or application required. Archery antlerless deer permits are available statewide with no county cap and no quota limit, making archery season an excellent option for doe harvest and extended time afield. Ozark County is within Missouri's CWD Management Zone for 2025-2026, which prohibits the use of grain, salt, minerals, and other consumable attractants year-round. Under updated 2025-2026 statewide carcass rules, hunters are no longer restricted from moving deer parts across county lines but must dispose of unused parts (spine, brain, eyes) in a sanitary landfill or on the harvest property. No county-specific quota permits or special-access draws apply to standard deer hunting in Ozark County.

Small Game: Squirrel season May 23–Feb. 15 (10 per day); cottontail rabbit Oct. 1–Feb. 15 (6 per day). Waterfowl: Bryant Creek, North Fork of the White River, and the Current River corridor provide floating duck hunting opportunities; federal duck stamp and Missouri small game license required. Furbearers including coyote, raccoon, and bobcat are present in large numbers given the forested terrain.

Ozark County is one of Missouri's most rewarding big-woods deer destinations for hunters seeking mature bucks, solitude, and genuine wilderness hunting experience. The combination of over 38,000 acres of Mark Twain National Forest plus Ozark National Scenic Riverways corridor land gives the county more contiguous public hunting acreage than most of its Ozarks neighbors. The karst terrain — sinkholes, limestone bluffs, spring-fed hollows, and dense mixed-oak canopy — naturally produces bucks that reach age class on public land due to the access challenges that filter out less-committed hunters. The Bryant Creek drainage and North Fork of the White River bottomlands function as high-quality rut travel corridors, and savvy hunters who scout floats or topo maps can identify pinch points that concentrate deer movement. Early archery season in the deep hollows before leaves drop is a unique experience that rivals any big-woods archery hunt in the Midwest. The combination of low pressure, extended public access, and genuine trophy potential on foot-access-only national forest land makes Ozark County a standout for experienced Missouri hunters.
