Extremely flat Mississippi River flood plain, one of the lowest-elevation landscapes in Missouri. Row crops — soybeans, cotton, corn, and rice — cover the majority of the county. Deer cover is concentrated in scattered bottomland hardwood patches, drainage ditch corridors lined with cottonwood and willow, oxbow lake margins with cypress and buttonbush, and the timber that backs up against the Mississippi mainline and setback levees. The Birds Point–New Madrid Floodway, the land between the mainline levee and the setback levee along the Mississippi, contains significant timber and wetland habitat that floods periodically. Topographic relief is essentially zero; hunting strategy revolves around edge habitat rather than terrain features.

Moderate overall, with pressure concentrated heavily on the two conservation areas during the November firearms season. Donaldson Point CA draws hunters from surrounding Bootheel counties and can feel crowded on opening weekend; Ten Mile Pond CA is primarily a waterfowl destination and sees lighter deer pressure. Private land experiences vary widely — landowners with quality timber or food plots may have long-standing lease arrangements, but cold-calling farmers for permission is more productive here than in higher-profile Ozark counties because the county simply attracts fewer out-of-county deer hunters. Archery pressure is light across both public and private ground.

Missouri sells a standard deer and turkey combination permit that covers one antlered deer and one turkey statewide. Additional antlerless deer hunting permits (ADPs) are available for New Madrid County and can be purchased over the counter or online through MDC; the Bootheel counties have historically had antlerless tags available given manageable herd density relative to habitat carrying capacity. New Madrid County is not within Missouri's Antler Point Restriction (APR) zone — any legal buck is harvestable during all firearm seasons. Wild turkey populations occupy the bottomland hardwood corridors and respond well to calling; spring season quality here is underrated because light hunter pressure keeps birds from going henned-up silent as quickly as in heavily hunted Ozark counties. Waterfowl hunting is a genuine highlight — New Madrid County sits directly on the Mississippi Flyway and the managed impoundments at Ten Mile Pond CA and Donaldson Point CA hold mallards, pintails, teal, and Canada geese during migration. Duck hunting in the same week as archery deer season is a realistic combination trip. Dove hunting in early September over harvested grain fields can be excellent, particularly near sunflower plots or picked corn along field edges. Fox squirrel and gray squirrel inhabit the bottomland hardwoods and old-growth timber patches; squirrel numbers in mature timber here can be exceptional. Quail numbers have declined sharply from historical levels across the Bootheel but brushy field borders and CRP edges hold remnant coveys. Furbearers — raccoon, beaver, and river otter — are abundant along the Mississippi and its drainage network.

Mississippi River bottom deer hunting at Donaldson Point CA offers genuine floodplain whitetail habitat — mature cottonwood and oak timber, oxbow sloughs, and agricultural edge — on publicly accessible ground that few Missouri hunters bother to reach. Deer that call the river timber home tend to be well-fed on agricultural mast and corn, and older bucks in this environment carry noticeably heavier body mass than their Ozark counterparts. The waterfowl-and-deer combination is the defining characteristic of a trip to New Madrid County — decoy a flooded timber hole at first light, then hang a lock-on for the afternoon sit in the same drainage, and you have one of the more distinctive hunting experiences Missouri offers. Private-land permission hunting over agricultural fields, particularly soybean stubble adjacent to timber blocks during the November firearms season, can produce high deer movement and encounters with quality bucks that have been fattening on row crops all fall.
