County Gentry, Missouri

Gentry County occupies northwest Missouri's Rolling Hills Prairie — flat to gently rolling plains at roughly 866–1,010 feet elevation, well removed from the Ozarks. The Grand River and its Middle Fork are the dominant waterways, carving modest timber corridors of cottonwood, sycamore, and silver maple through otherwise open farmland. Soils — Nodaway silt loam, Pershing silty clay loam, Ladoga silt loam — rank among the most productive in northern Missouri and support continuous corn-soybean rotation that delivers exceptional deer nutrition and body mass. Upland cover blends row crops, remnant native prairie in the Grand River Grasslands priority geography, and scattered old-field brushy transition zones that concentrate deer and turkeys year-round.

Low to moderate overall, and among the lower-pressure counties in Missouri's northwest tier. Gentry County sits roughly 90 miles north of Kansas City and well over three hours from St. Louis, shielding it from the heavy weekend traffic that hammers metro-fringe counties. There is no major outfitter cluster drawing out-of-state hunters the way Knox or Shelby counties do in northeast Missouri. Public land pressure focuses on Elam Bend and Seat Memorial CAs during the November firearms peak but spreads across a combined public footprint exceeding 5,000 acres. Private ground — the vast majority of huntable land — sees light pressure from a thin rural population. Compared to the rest of Missouri, Gentry County ranks as genuinely low pressure and is well suited to DIY hunters who put in scouting time.

Gentry County is fully open to all antlerless portions of the firearms deer season. Hunters may fill up to four firearms antlerless permits here (blue-category county on the MDC antlerless map). Archery antlerless permits carry no county restriction — hunters may purchase and fill an unlimited number during archery season statewide. All permits are over-the-counter; Gentry County has no quota or controlled-access permit system. Resident landowners with at least 75 acres in the county may apply for two additional no-cost Resident Landowner Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permits. Missouri's antler-point restriction (the former 8-point rule that applied to several northwest Missouri counties) was eliminated statewide effective June 30, 2026 — any legal buck is now harvestable. Hunters should verify whether Gentry County is within a CWD surveillance zone requiring mandatory sampling at check stations before the season.

Deer archery season: September 15 through November 13 and November 25 through January 15. Youth firearms deer: October 24–25 and November 27–29. Antlerless-only firearms portions (Gentry County is open): October 9–11 and December 5–13. November firearms: November 14–24. Alternative methods (muzzleloader, air rifle, atlatl, archery): December 26 through January 5. Turkey spring: youth April 11–12, regular April 20 through May 10; fall archery turkey concurrent with deer archery; fall firearms turkey October 1–31 in open counties, including Gentry. Small game — squirrel, rabbit, quail — is legal on Elam Bend, Seat Memorial, and other MDC areas under statewide seasons. The Grand River corridor and its backwater sloughs support early-season wood duck and teal with mallard migration through November, providing legitimate waterfowl hunting without requiring managed marshes.

The Grand River is Gentry County's hunting backbone — a largely unchannelized stretch producing classic north Missouri edge habitat where mature bottomland timber meets corn and soybean fields, growing the heavy-bodied, wide-racked whitetails northern Missouri is known for. The 2025–2026 season recorded 1,536 total deer (797 antlered bucks, 632 does), strong numbers for a low-pressure northwest county. Elam Bend Conservation Area is one of the better public setups in the MDC northwest region — shooting range, primitive camping, and boat ramp make multi-day archery hunts feasible without private land. The recent elimination of the antler-point restriction removes a barrier for hunters who previously had to pass on young bucks. Corn and soybean rotations on some of Missouri's most fertile silt loam soils mean deer reach premium body weights; mature bucks from this corridor routinely gross above 140 inches. Low destination-hunt competition compared to northeast Missouri keeps public ground manageable, and the blend of river access, quality CAs, and agricultural surroundings makes Gentry County a practical, underrated choice for DIY north Missouri whitetail hunters.
