Eastern gray and fox squirrel season runs May 23 through Feb. 15 with a daily limit of 10. Cottontail rabbit season Oct. 1 through Feb. 15. The Niangua River and its spring-fed tributaries support wood duck in flooded bottomtimber early in the season, though Dallas County lacks major waterfowl impoundments. Raccoon, coyote, and bobcat are present; trapping and predator calling are popular pursuits in the county's timber.

Dallas County's appeal lies in its classic Ozark character — remote timbered hollows, spring-fed clear streams, and the Niangua River corridor create an environment where bucks can age on private timber tracts without the pressure found closer to Springfield or St. Louis. Barclay Conservation Area, while modest in size, provides genuine habitat diversity with rare dolomite glades, Niangua River frontage, and mixed oak-hickory that concentrates deer and turkey year-round. The east-west gradient from timbered ridges to prairie-edge farmland generates productive habitat transitions and feeding corridors that position deer predictably during the rut. Ozark bucks trend toward heavier mass and longer tines compared to smaller-bodied deer in intensively farmed regions, and the lifted APR in the CWD zone removes a regulatory barrier on private ground where landowners voluntarily practice selective harvest. For hunters with private land access, the combination of limited public-land competition, reliable mast crop, river-bottom travel corridors, and farmland-timber edge creates legitimate trophy whitetail potential in a county that remains under the radar for most out-of-state hunters.
