County Adair, Missouri

Adair County sits on the glaciated till plains of north-central Missouri, well north of the Ozarks. Terrain is gently rolling glacial hills with elevations ranging roughly 800–1,060 feet, carved by the South Fork Salt River and numerous smaller tributaries. Fertile loess soils overlying glacial till make the county predominantly agricultural — corn and soybean fields cover more than half the landscape. Timbered ground is concentrated in riparian corridors along creek bottoms and wooded draws; upland timber is sparse and patchy. This edge-heavy mosaic of row crops, pasture, old fields, and timber strips is ideal whitetail habitat, providing abundant food and bedding cover in close proximity.

Moderate to low relative to the rest of Missouri. Adair County is roughly 170 miles from St. Louis and 175 miles from Kansas City, limiting weekend warrior pressure that hammers counties within an hour of those metros. Kirksville (population approximately 17,000) provides the only local urban base, keeping resident pressure manageable. Union Ridge CA draws hunters from across northeast Missouri and can see concentrated pressure during the November firearms season, but the county's overall character keeps it well below the pressure levels found near major population centers.

Adair County falls within the MDC CWD Management Zone (a positive CWD detection occurred in the county in 2014). Hunters may fill four over-the-counter firearms antlerless permits in Adair County during the firearms seasons — no quota competition required. Archery antlerless tags are also available over-the-counter with no county-specific restriction. The early antlerless firearms portion (Oct 9–11, 2026) and late antlerless firearms portion (Dec 5–13, 2026) are both open. Resident landowners holding at least 75 acres may obtain additional no-cost Resident Landowner Firearms Antlerless Permits. CWD zone rules prohibit transporting certain high-risk carcass parts out of the zone; MDC maintains voluntary sampling stations throughout the county.

Waterfowl hunting is available on wetland areas within Union Ridge CA and along creek corridors; migrating ducks and Canada geese move through on fall migration.

Union Ridge Conservation Area anchors Adair County as a public-land deer hunting destination — at 8,268 acres it is one of the larger MDC properties in northeast Missouri, with roughly 5,400 acres of timber providing excellent deer and turkey habitat. Northeast Missouri's fertile soils and expansive corn and soybean fields produce deer with superior body weights and strong trophy potential; the county's distance from major metros allows bucks to reach older age classes compared to more pressured regions closer to Kansas City and St. Louis. Four over-the-counter antlerless permits per firearms season eliminate quota-permit competition. The county's mosaic of timbered creek bottoms, wooded draws, and agricultural fields creates diverse hunting scenarios. CWD is present and monitored, but deer numbers remain robust.
