Sign in to contributeDPA 645 sits in Minnesota's driftless area, a rugged landscape of bluffs, wooded valleys, and row-crop hollows in the Fillmore/Olmsted/Winona county region of southeastern Minnesota. Deer populations are at management goal, the 2024 firearm hunter success rate hit 49%, and the area carries a generous five-deer limit with early antlerless and late CWD seasons. Public land is limited at roughly 11% of the unit — anchored by State Forest tracts and the Schueler WMA — so most hunting requires private land permission.
Rugged driftless-region topography of wooded bluffs, coulees, and narrow valleys interspersed with agricultural row-crop fields. Land cover is approximately 29% woody cover, 28% grassland and wetlands, 32% annual row crops, and 7% developed. Total non-water area is 330 sq mi.
Public hunting access is limited at 11.1% of the unit. Available public land includes State Forest parcels, the Schueler State Wildlife Management Area (WMA), miscellaneous state land, and county-managed land. No walk-in access program acreage is present. The majority of the unit is privately owned and requires landowner permission.

White-tailed deer are the primary game species. The driftless bluff-and-valley habitat is excellent deer country; population is at management goal as of 2021 target. No significant turkey, pheasant, bear, grouse, or moose presence documented for this unit.
Five-deer limit (up to three antlered bucks, one per license type) with early antlerless season Oct 16-19 and a late CWD hunt Dec 19-21. Mandatory CWD testing on opening firearm weekend (Nov 8-9). Carcass movement restrictions and a deer feeding/attractant ban are in effect for Fillmore, Olmsted, and Winona Counties. 2024 firearm hunter density was 8 hunters per sq mi with a 49% success rate.
