DPA 299 covers nearly all of Blue Earth County, a portion of eastern Watonwan County, and the southeast corner of Brown County in south-central Minnesota. The landscape is dominated by intensively farmed uplands broken by wooded river corridors, lake and wetland shorelines, and scattered conservation lands that provide excellent deer habitat. The population is stable at management goal with a two-deer limit in effect for 2025.

Terrain & elevation

Intensively farmed uplands (annual row crops dominate) with wooded river corridors along the Blue Earth and Watonwan Rivers, lake and wetland shorelines, and scattered conservation lands. Total area approximately 386 sq mi. Mostly flat to gently rolling agricultural land typical of south-central Minnesota.

Hunting pressure

moderate

Species & seasons

White-tailed deer are the primary big game species; population stable at DNR management goal with ~4 hunters/sq mi and 35% success in 2024. Wild turkey are present in the river corridor woodlands and agricultural edges of Blue Earth County and are huntable. No bear, moose, or grouse of significance in this heavily agricultural DPA. Pheasant present but population limited compared to western MN farmland zones.

Highlights

Wooded river corridors along the Blue Earth and Watonwan Rivers concentrate deer in an otherwise open agricultural landscape. 2025 designation is a two-deer limit (either sex), changed from either-sex to slow population growth. Hunter success rate of 35% in 2024. Optional CWD testing available. East Minnesota River Game Refuge open to archery deer hunting. No special draw required — OTC license with two-deer bag limit.
